Language Planning and Regulation

Finnish

The Language Planning Department of the Institute for the Languages of Finland (also known as Kielitoimisto, The Finnish Language Office) is responsible for regulating current Finnish usage.

We issue instructions and recommendations on current standards of usage and publish related information on our website. We keep up-to-date with new linguistic developments and contribute to public debate on language-related issues. We also provide guidance in the use of dictionaries, manuals and other language aids.

We contribute to language debate through our quarterly language-planning journal, Kielikello.

We provide language guidance to the general public, chiefly in the form of telephone counselling services.

We offer a variety of workshops instructing participants on current language recommendations. We also share our expertise by writing commissioned articles and other texts and by providing text revision services.

The regulation and monitoring of bureaucratic language is an important part of our language planning work. We have resident experts dedicated to overseeing official administrative usage and EU Finnish.

The chief authority responsible for Finnish language planning is the statutory Finnish Language Board, which convenes regularly to pass decisions on major language usage issues.

Our name planning experts provide answers to all questions concerning Finnish names and their usage.

The Institute is additionally responsible for regulating other languages used in Finland: Swedish, Saami, Romany and Finnish Sign Language.
