Research Projects

Our research projects examine a variety of specific topics. We study written texts and spoken language, as well as geographical place names and proper names, mostly analysed from the perspective of present-day language usage and variation. Our chief aim is to gather data on what is going on in language today and the community in which it is used, with due consideration of relevant historical factors.

Our projects have examined topics such as:

  • Changes in Finnish dialects;
  • Language used in service settings in various parts of Finland;
  • Urban nomenclature;
  • The history of literary Finnish in the 19th century; and
  • The nature and effects of texts written by authorities.

Due to limited resources, our research on Swedish, Finnish and Finland-Swedish Sign Language, Romani and the Saami languages has been focused on practical dictionary and language planning work.

Our research findings are primarily published as separate academic publications and articles in scientific journals. They are also presented at Finnish and foreign conferences and communicated to the public at large.
