Onomastic Research

Onomastic research is one of our special focus areas. Students from universities all around Finland participate in our joint academic ventures. Our expert onomasticians lecture at universities, and we support and coordinate onomastic research by regularly organising related seminars and workshops.

Urban place names are the main focus of our research at present. In autumn 2005 we launched a project examining usage of urban place names in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Other ongoing research includes a study of important Finnish toponyms and a project looking at Savonian place names listed in the Finnish National Land Survey’s Geographic Name Register
