The Lexical Archive of Finnish Dialects

The Lexical Archive of Finnish Dialects contains more than 8 million items of data on some 400,000 dialect words. It also includes a collection of proverbs and other colloquial expressions comprising 1.4 million data entries, plus a number of other separate collections.

 

The dialect data covers all Finnish dialects spoken within the country’s borders and those formerly spoken on the Karelian Isthmus and in the Ingria region. Also included are the Finnish dialects of Sweden’s Westrobothnia region and Finnmark (Ruija) in Norway, as well as the language formerly spoken in Värmland in central Sweden by Finns originally from the Savo region of eastern Finland. About 54.6% of all the data in the Archive concerns Western Finnish dialects and about 45.5% Eastern Finnish dialects (see map and dialect descriptions). The Archive also includes a number of collections on nineteenth century Finnish.

 

The Archive is open from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and its collections are available to all users. If assistance is needed, this should be arranged in advance.
